January 24, 2011
Question: We have missed several snow days. When will those be made up?
Answer: As of January 24, we have missed four snow days. Those days will be made up May 18, May 19, April 21, and March 21. If necessary, the next two scheduled make up days would be April 25, May 20.
Question: When will the new high school classroom addition be complete? When will you begin using the new building?
Answer: The building is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. Our current plan is to not start using the new building until August 2011.
Question: What is going to happen to the old building?
Answer: No final decisions have been made regarding the old building. However, the district has applied for a grant from FEMA to construct a multipurpose facility which would also serve as a tornado safe room. If approved by FEMA and by the Salisbury R-IV Board of Education, FEMA would pay 75% of the eligible cost of the facility. The safe room would be constructed at the site of the old building.
Question: When do you expect a decision from FEMA?
Answer: That is a great question and one I can not answer. We started the application process with FEMA nearly one year ago. The process has been long and slow. Right now, FEMA is awaiting an environmental review and awaiting comment from the National Advisory Council (the National Advisory Council comment is necessary since the project would include demolition of the old high school building). I was told a little over a week ago that FEMA hoped to have both of these items within two to three weeks, but they were not sure either. I am hopeful FEMA will make a decision shortly after they have these two items, but I am not sure that will happen.
