Tornado Safe Room

Salisbury R-IV School District hosts a Community Tornado Safe Room ready for use during tornado and dangerous high wind events. The Safe Room is located on the high school campus at 1000 South Maple Ave., Salisbury, MO 65281

This facility is owned by Salisbury School District. The Safe Room’s first function is to provide protection for its students and staff from tornado and dangerous high wind events during school hours.

Outside of school hours (7:45 am -3:30 pm), the tornado Safe Room will be available for residents in the community that do not have basements or other Safe Rooms that live within what we refer to as the “Tornado Protection Zone” (TPZ).

This facility will be readied for occupancy when a tornado watch is issued for students and the general public of the Tornado Protection Zone. When a tornado warning is issued (tornado sirens activated) by the Salisbury Emergency Management Director and/or the National Weather Service, the Safe Room will be unlocked/opened for surrounding residents within the TPZ (tornado protection zone) to seek shelter in the Safe Room 24 hours a day/7 days a week except during school operating hours and will close when the watch or tornado warning expires. Again, this is available only to the public within the TPZ area outside of normal school hours.

Due to the estimated time necessary to reach the shelter after a warning is given, the Safe Room cannot provide shelter for those beyond the TPZ.

In the event that severe weather is pending, the Salisbury City Police will open the facility until the threat of severe weather has passed. Officials on location will monitor and track the storm via the internet and online communications.

If you and/or a family member have a special need (physical impairment, special medical alerts, aid animal, etc.) please print out the Special Needs Form on this web page or contact the Salisbury R-IV Superintendent’s Office and request the Special Needs Form. Upon receipt of this form, we will contact you to discuss accommodations that you or your family may need.

It is our hope that the patrons of Salisbury feel welcome and are well served by the presence of our Tornado Shelter.

Sincerely,

Salisbury R-IV Administration
