April 10, 2025 Local FCCLA Member Experience State Government Firsthand in Jefferson City Jefferson City, MO – Forty-five enthusiastic junior and senior members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated in the annual Missouri Legislative Shadowing Project held April 8–9 in the state’s capitol. Salisbury FCCLA Member Anna Swallow shadowed Representative Kent Haden. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) education programs through grade 12. With the family as its central focus, FCCLA is the only national CTSO that promotes personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education. Since 1946, Missouri FCCLA members have made a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing critical personal, work, and societal issues. Missouri FCCLA has more than 9,000 members in more than 320 chapters. The Legislative Shadowing Project gives students the opportunity to engage directly with Missouri’s legislative process, offering a hands-on look into state government as well as the opportunity for members to advocate for Missouri families, students, and Career and Technical Education as an integral part of education in Missouri’s schools. The two-day experience began with a welcome reception on April 8, where students enjoyed light appetizers, participated in a civics review and agenda discussion, and heard from guest speaker Jessica Seitz, Executive Director of the Missouri Network Against Child Abuse (MO-NACA). Jessica, who previously served four years as the agency’s Director of Public Policy, shared valuable insights into advocacy, public service, and her time at the capitol. She also discussed previous and current legislation affecting children and families. On Wednesday, April 9, participants met with their assigned state representatives and senators to begin their shadowing experience at the Capitol. Students observed legislative sessions and committee meetings, explored the roles of lawmakers, and gained a deeper understanding of how state policies are shaped. Ella Foy, a student from Affton High School’s FCCLA chapter and the 2024-2025 Missouri FCCLA President, was honored with the opportunity to open the House of Representatives legislative session by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The experience concluded with a reflective wrap-up session, where students shared favorite memories and created thank-you notes for the legislators and supporters who helped make this unique opportunity possible. The Legislative Shadowing Project continues to inspire future leaders by connecting students with real-world civic engagement, fostering the next generation of informed and active citizens.

Next school year we will be using Privit to keep track of Physicals and all athletic paperwork. As a parent you will need to create an account and add your student/athlete. Once in you will see all the required documents to fill out or upload and get them added to the sports or activities they will participate in. You will be able to upload the documents from a file or use a picture of them from your phone. This will help everyone get everything they need turned in and on time. If you need help getting things uploaded or account created contact the school and we will help you out. https://salisbury.e-ppe.com/index.jspa
